The tenement house at 1 Mariacka Street was built in 1895 and from the beginning its ground floor housed an elegant confectionery, called Kaiser Cafe before World War I. After 1922, the premises were renamed Astoria and operated under this name until the 1970s. 20th century. In the interwar period, it was here that the Katowice bohemia met. In addition to the culinary, guests could also enjoy live music here. Unfortunately, in the following decades of the Polish People's Republic, the Astoria began to lose its former glory, and its interior was completely rebuilt.
We don't know much about the history of the neon sign advertising Astoria. Only one photo documenting its appearance has survived to this day. The large inscription placed on the roof of the tenement house was visible not only to passers-by, but also to travelers leaving the Katowice station towards the east. The neon sign was characterized by an extremely exquisitely designed, decorative typeface, placing it among the best projects in Katowice.
