Perhaps the most beautiful neon sign in the history of Katowice was created in 1964. It was installed on the building of the historic residential and commercial tenement house at 3 Maja Street 13, known as the Oswald Findeisen Tenement House. The illumination project prepared by Zbigniew Pierzchała, M.Sc. Eng., depicts three monkeys hanging from a branch protruding from the facade. It must have been an incredibly bold project for the 1960s, but it certainly brought a lot of joy to passersby, onlookers, and visitors from outside the city. The idea behind the monkeys is unknown; we don't know if they were an advertisement or a light installation. The building itself has changed its function multiple times over the years. It housed a delicatessen, a jewellery store, and in the years after World War II, the ground floor commercial spaces changed owners several times.
For several years now, monkeys recreated on the basis of archival materials can be admired near the Market Square. They were hung on lampposts at the playground to bring joy to Katowice residents and our guests again after over 50 years.
