The PDT department store (State Department Store) was officially opened on October 30, 1948. In the impressive four-story department store for its time, you could buy (according to the press of the day) everything – from a motorcycle to a chamber pot.
The first neon sign appeared on the building's facade on the opening day and was a small three-letter abbreviation enclosed in a circle. 14 years later, in early 1962, the state-owned company REKLAMA, which at that time held a monopoly on the preparation and installation of neon signs, presented a design and executed another version of the PDT advertisement, visible in the photo above.
The 1970s brought a new name for the department store – PEDANT. Along with this, the lighting elements on the facade were also replaced. Right next to it, the figure of Kmicic appeared, lifting his hat, who was encouraging the purchase of men's fashion. For many older residents of Katowice, it was one of the most beautiful neon signs in the city's history.
