Since the railway line was brought to Katowice in 1846, this previously small industrial settlement began to transform dynamically into a thriving urban centre. Near the station, hotels, restaurants, a post office, banks, and other facilities needed to serve travellers began to be built. One of the most luxurious hotels was the Savoy, which opened before World War I. It was located at Holtzestrasse 4-6 (now Mariacka Street). In the 1920s, the hotel restaurant was a favourite spot of Wojciech Korfanty. It's no wonder that it was here, on June 20, 2022, that the leaders of the Third Silesian Uprising met with General Szeptycki, the commander of the Polish troops entering Upper Silesia.
